World Book Night – Thursday 23 April

On Thursday 23 April The Reading Agency charity is hosting their annual World Book Night.

It’s an evening to celebrate the power of diving into a great book and this year the event will be taking place digitally due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

The past few weeks many of us have been trying to find ways of entertaining ourselves during self-isolation and social distancing, and books have played a major role in coping during the pandemic. Reading helps to keep us occupied, gain knowledge and can provide a little escapism through difficult times.

I’ve managed to read twice as much as I would have done usually, and I’m on track to double my current Goodreads Reading Challenge for this year. I’ve taken advantage of my local libraries providing more e-books online and Kindle offering huge amounts of books to download for free or at a low cost. I know a lot of my friends with kids have also been ecstatic about all of the free reading and teaching materials available online to help with home schooling while schools are closed.

These free resources are fantastic and you should look into any you can get access to. I’ve found free e-books on careers, interview techniques, business and marketing, web development and a lot more of interest to me, and you can too.

The agency has put together an eclectic reading list this year, if you would like some inspiration to take part. My favourite from the list is P.G. Wodehouse’s “Stiff Upper Lip”, it’s always a joy to read a Jeeves and Wooster story and they are guaranteed to cheer you up.

The Reading Agency is encouraging everyone to share their love of books on social media using #ReadingHour.
